Radial Bar Chart

The Radial Bar Chart extension lays your bars out around a circle, so you can compare many categories in a compact dial. It suits rankings and part-to-whole views where a long horizontal bar chart would run off the dashboard.

Data Requirements

Your Tableau worksheet should include:

  • 1 Dimension for the Category encoding (for example Region, Segment, Product).
  • 1 Measure for the Value encoding, which sets each bar's length (for example Sales, Profit, Count).

Add Radial Bar Chart to your worksheet

First, download the manifest file. It tells Tableau where to load the extension from.

Download radialbarchart.trex

Direct link: https://dataskera.com/downloads/radialbarchart.trex

Then, in Tableau:

  1. On the Marks card, open the Mark type dropdown, and under Viz Extensions choose Add Extension.
  2. In the Add an Extension dialog, choose Access Local Viz Extensions, then open the radialbarchart.trex file you just downloaded.
  3. When Tableau asks, allow the extension to access the data in the workbook.
  4. The welcome screen appears. Sign in with your Dataskera account, or on Tableau Desktop choose Use on Desktop without an account. See Signing in & access below.
  5. Build the chart: drag a dimension onto Category and a measure onto Value.
Tableau Server or Cloud:
A site admin must allow the extension by adding its URL to the site's safe list, and the view needs the Download Summary Data permission. Extension URL: https://vizextension.dataskera.com/radialbarchart/radialbarchart.html

Format panel

Open the Format panel (the gear on the chart) to customize it. It is for the dashboard author and is not shown to viewers. It has six tabs:

  • General: chart shape (Fit to Screen by default, or Circle), bar width and gap, corner radius, inner radius, start position, sweep direction, empty gap, background, and an optional center metric.
  • Grid: an optional value scale with round-number ticks. In Circle mode it draws lines across the rings; in Fit to Screen it marks the ticks along the outer ring. Set the tick count, labels, decimals, and colors.
  • Colors: a palette with an Auto-assign button that applies it to every category in one click, a precise color per category, and opacity. Choosing a palette on its own never repaints the chart; Auto-assign is the one action that recolors everything from it.
  • Labels: show or hide labels, which bars to label, their position, and formatting.
  • Legend: position and content, with an optional show/hide toggle on the chart.
  • Tooltip: a custom tooltip template.
Negative values:
A radial bar shows magnitude as arc length, so a negative category cannot be drawn as an arc. Negative values are left out of the rings but stay in the legend with their real value, and a small notice on the chart reports how many were not drawn.
